Vegan in Munich: A Food Lover’s Guide to the City’s Best Spots

Munich is the third-largest city in Germany. The city has a lot of beer breweries even from recognized brands like Augustiner and Pauliner and it is famous for the Oktoberfest festival. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival every year from mid or late September to the first Sunday in October. If you are travelling in other parts of the year, there are some things besides Oktoberfest that you can see in the city of Munich.

WHAT TO SEE IN THE CITY OF MUNICH?

Alte Pinakothek in the city of Munich is one of the oldest art galleries in the entire world. Marienplatz is the main town square where stands fascinating gothic church called Neues Rathaus. The museum you can’t miss when you are visiting Munich is the Deutsches Museum which is the world’s largest museum of science and technology.

Every year there is also the biggest Europe crystals festival called The Munich Show. If you love crystals just like me, you have to visit. It is annually every October. The one thing I love about big European cities. Shopping! There is Kaufingerstrasse which is a pedestrian zone street full of different shops with shoes and clothing.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS!

Regarding vegan food, there are a lot of vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants in Munich. The most important piece of advice from me to you is to make your reservations upfront. I am not joking but I have travelled quite a lot and never in my life had such a big problem with finding a table in a restaurant to eat at.

Everything is fully booked especially at weekends. So do not make mistake like me and come prepared when travelling to Munich.

OUR HOTEL CHOICE IN MUNICH

We stayed at the NH Collection München Bavaria Hotel. The location is central and right next to the train station. There are not a lot of high buildings in the city centre of Munich, but this hotel is one of the highest and because of that you have an amazing view from almost every room.

Breakfast is quite pricey around 26 € per person per night. We took it only for the first night because we were not sure how many vegan options there were especially for that price tag.

For breakfast in this hotel, you can find fruits and cereal with almond or soy milk. There is also bread with vegan butter and jam. There are some amazing vegan options in the city of Munich so here is my top list.

SOY VEGAN MÜNCHEN

The first one is the best one called Soy Vegan München. It is a vegan Vietnamese restaurant. There are always long lines at the front door so as I said before – make your reservations. We could not book a table for dinner, but I managed to get us a table for lunch.

From Monday to Friday, there is a lunch menu for 8.90 € which is a very good price that includes a summer roll with peanut sauce or spicy soup for an appetizer, a variety of main dishes to choose from for the main dish, and a drink.

We tried udon noodles coconut milk soup, traditional Pho soup, Tofu-peanut sauce, and fried flat rice noodles. Everything was plated beautifully and very photogenic as you can see. The taste was amazing.

I cannot wait to come back to Munich one day for dinner and try their other incredible dishes like different vegan Asian tapas, noodle dishes, and rice dishes. And as a bonus, the ambiance of the restaurant is very nice.

SIGGIS VEGAN & FRESH FOOD

The second restaurant that we loved was Siggis vegan & fresh food. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and the restaurant is fully vegan. The menu is in German which was a little bit hard for us to translate but we managed, and I am sure that if we had problems, we could ask our waitress for help.

I tried the lasagne with fresh salad, which was very good. We also tried a big salad plate, a burger, and a grateful healthy plate with vegetables and rice.

For dessert, we had Sacher cake, and I must say it was the best vegan Sacher cake I ever tried. Everything was fresh and delicious. For the next day’s breakfast, we took basic sandwiches to go, and they were very tasteful even if they were not so fresh anymore.

MAX PETT VEGAN RESTAURANT

Max Pett Das Vegan Restaurant is a fully vegan restaurant where the friendly waitress took us in and managed to get us a table in the corner even though everything was also fully booked. I cannot thank her enough. You can imagine how hungry we were from a whole day of walking around the city of Munich and not eating anything.

The menu is not so big, they have seven main dishes and we tried Beyond Meat “cheese” Burger and Gnocchi. The burger was very oniony but because of that very delicious. I liked my gnocchi very much. We did not manage to try any other dishes as we were already full.

STARBUCKS IS MY SAFE CHOICE FOR VEGAN COFFEE

There are not a lot of coffee shops right in the city centre of Munich. I always want to support small businesses and coffee shops but when I am not sure if I can find vegan milk for coffee, I always choose the safe option which is Starbucks. So here is the picture of me enjoying a delicious soy cappuccino and warming my hands on coffee cups before going shopping.

VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN THE CITY OF MUNICH

If my stay in Munich was not that short and if it was easier to get a free table at any other vegan restaurant, I would love to also try Bodhi vegan restaurant which offers some of the vegan dishes that I would love to try like crispy coated soy steak in dark beer sauce, cauliflower buffalo wings, and grilled bread dumplings.

There is also a restaurant called Hippie Chay which is a fully vegan Asian-fusion restaurant offering a variety of dishes like poke bowls, udon noodles, and vegan dumplings. There is also Chay Restaurant which I believe is the same branch of restaurants. The restaurants I think are also worth the visit are: The Gratitude, Vegelangelo, Erbil’s Vegan & Mediterranean, and Emmi’s Kitchen.

GERMANY IS VERY VEGAN FRIENDLY

I think that Germany is one of the European countries that is very vegan-friendly. A lot of people in Germany are starting to eat like that, especially in younger generations.

On this website called Vegconomist, they presented a study that found that in just four years since 2016 the number of vegan Germans doubled to 2.6 million people. From seven analyzed European countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Portugal, and Denmark) Germany has the most vegans which is 3.2 percent of the whole population. I love that more and more people are living and eating this way.

Munich is a lovely German city that I would love to visit again for a short shopping and eat a lot of vegan food trip. Next time I will be prepared and make all my reservations at least one week ahead. Next on my bucket list in Germany is Berlin and when I visit the city, I will make sure to write you the best recommendations for vegan restaurants in the city. I heard that it is vegan heaven.
