Valladolid is Full of Friendly People, Colourful Architecture, and Delicious Vegan Food. Check This Guide for the Best Vegan Restaurants and Attractions in the Area!

After visiting Holbox Island and loving it so much. I was not expecting to be so blown away by the city of Valladolid in Mexico. This city has so much charm. It is full of friendly people; colourful architecture and I was surprised by the quality of vegan food there. We chose Valladolid because of its proximity to the famous Chichen Itza and there are also many amazing cenotes in the area.

WHERE TO STAY IN VALLADOLID?

The first thing that made our stay in Valladolid, Mexico so unforgettable was our hotel choice. We chose to stay in Hotel Posada San Juan, it has amazing Booking reviews and free parking. The location is within walking distance of the centre of Valladolid.

On our arrival at the hotel, we were upgraded to the best Superior double room with King size bed and a balcony. I must admit that if I knew how good this room was, I would choose it right away when making a reservation.

The hotel has 16 rooms distributed in two colonial houses with beautiful gardens, terraces, and a swimming pool. There were little water, tea, and coffee spots everywhere with cosy places to sit and enjoy your drink. You can check the availability here

The hotel also has a very friendly dog greeting everyone on arrival! The staff is always smiling, and they also gave us the best recommendations about what to see in Valladolid and which cenotes are the least touristy. For breakfast, there are not a lot of vegan options, but we ate some fruit and bread with jam.

WHAT TO SE IN VALLADOLID, MEXICO?

Chichen Itza of course. The main reason tourists come to this area and Valladolid is one of the 7 wonders of the world. For some people, Chichen Itza and other historical monuments can be the main reason for visiting Mexico.

Because the entrance fee is quite pricey, we decided that we will go in without a guide. But it was a big mistake! There are no boards with explanations about what you are seeing so we went back to the entrance and got ourselves an amazing guide who explained everything to us.

When you are visiting Chichen Itza you have to get a guide and choose one outside of the park so you can negotiate the price a little bit. The place is worth visiting because you learn a lot about Mayan history and see all the amazing things they created around Valladolid and in the other parts of Mexico.

SWIMMING IN CENOTES IN MEXICO

The other main attractions in this area are cenotes. In our hotel, they recommended that we visit the Cenote Yokdzonot which is around a 1-hour car drive away from Valladolid but it is very close to Chichen Itza so you can have a refreshing swim after a whole day of sightseeing. We were so glad that we went there.

It is not touristy at all and very quiet. In the beginning, there was only a small group of people and after that, we were swimming in the cenote all by ourselves! The birds were singing, and we were swimming in the peaceful fresh water in the tropical heat. It was wonderful.

There are also other cenotes closer to the Valladolid but because of that, it can get crowded. You can also take a full guided tour to Chichen Itza, cenotes, and Valladolid.

CASA DE LOS VENADOS IN VALLADOLID CITY CENTRE

If you want to experience something unique in the Valladolid city centre, then you have to visit Casa de los Venados. This is a private property of a couple who is collecting Mexican folk art and placing it inside their home.

They have free tours a few times a day where at the end you can tip your guide who kindly guides you through the property and explains everything that you would like to know. We learned so much about Mexican traditions and art.

VEGAN FOOD IN VALLADOLID, MEXICO

LE KAAT, VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

The first and most important restaurant that I have to mention in Valladolid is Le Kaat. We were so impressed by their vegan food that we went there two days in a row and it was worth it. The restaurant has a nice garden area where you can eat your meal. It is a little city oasis.

It is a vegetarian restaurant but everything that is vegan is marked so you have no problem with guessing what you can eat or not. They offer delicious fresh smoothies and juices and separate breakfast, lunch/dinner menus. For breakfast, you can have bread with peanut butter and jam, a fruit bowl with granola, a vegan omelet, tortillas, and many more. But we only managed to try the lunch/dinner menu.

For entry, we tried the soup and a dish called Hongos ahumados which was so good, and it was smoked at our table for special effect. For the mains, you can have vegan tacos, burgers, pizza, pasta, and the restaurant’s special dishes which are: vegan Mexican plate, falafel plate, vegan smoked vegetables, wok vegetables, and many more.

We tried a falafel plate and my all-time favourite Mexican Plate. Because of this dish, we returned back the next day even though there are other vegan restaurants that I wanted to try in Valladolid. They also have some vegan desserts like chocolate truffles, raw vegan snickers, vegan brownies, muffins, and carrot cake.

YERBABUENA DEL SISAL RESTAURANT IN VALLADOLID

This restaurant is not vegan or vegetarian, but you can find some delicious options. The restaurant is full of vibrant colours and good energy. For lunch, you can have vegan lasagne with house salad, stuffed chiles with vegetables and rice, pasta with vegetables, and chayotes stuffed with quinoa and vegetables. You can also have many fresh juices and smoothies.

ELELA VEGAN ORGANIC CAFÉ RESTAURANT

Elela is based near Sisal Park in the city of Valladolid in Mexico, and it is a small artsy restaurant. They offer vegan tacos, some other dishes, and desserts. The staff is very friendly, and we felt very good there. We sadly did not try any food, but we had the best coffee in a cute cup with special plant milk that they do by themselves.

WHAT ELSE TO EAT IN VALLADOLID, MEXICO?

Valladolid is a small city in Mexico and for its size, it actually has quite a lot of vegan options. Other restaurants that we did not manage to try but have vegan options are La Yaqueria, Café Del Professor Pitagoras, Casa Maca, and Burrito Amor.

We will definitely check them out when we return to the amazing city of Valladolid. When travelling in Mexico our favourite snack was guacamole. You can find it at basically any restaurant anywhere. So we ate it every day and we did not complain because avocados there are perfect. I am still dreaming about the best guacamole from Mexico.

If you are travelling through Mexico, especially if you spend more time in Yucatan you have to spend a day or two in the city of Valladolid. People are really friendly, nature is beautiful and the city has amazing vegan food. There are also many craftsmen where you can buy their homemade products and support the locals in that way.
