Seychelles is one of the most fascinating tropical destinations that you can visit. I always wanted to see the beautiful nature and beaches of these islands. Seychelles is expensive but it is also possible to travel on a budget.

I was worried about being vegan in Seychelles. It is not the easiest destination but it is not impossible to find vegan food on the islands. In this article, I will explain how and where to eat vegan in Seychelles.

MOST POPULAR ISLANDS IN THE SEYCHELLES

First of all, which island to visit? There are 115 islands in Seychelles but the biggest and most popular ones are Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. I visited all of them and I recommend that you do too. I spend five nights on Praslin, four nights on La Digue, and four nights on Mahe.

When I go back to Seychelles, I will probably spend two nights on Mahe and more on the other two islands. I know it is different for anyone but Praslin and La Digue are really unique and beautiful. In Seychelles, you can find similar vegan options in most restaurants like vegetable curry and lentils. You can also get delicious fresh vegan fruit smoothies and juices on most of the popular beaches.

PRASLIN ISLAND IN THE SEYCHELLES

Praslin island in Seychelles has two beaches that blew my mind. I have never seen something so perfect. They are called Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette. The water is turquoise blue and calm, perfect for swimming.

On Praslin, you have to visit the nature park and UNESCO World Heritage Site called Vallée de Mai. There are famous CoCo de Mer trees that naturally grow only on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse in Seychelles. Praslin island was also the only one where I could find vegan smoothie bowls.

LA DIGUE ISLAND IN THE SEYCHELLES

Just a short 15-minute boat ride away there is La Digue island. La Digue island is one of the islands in the Seychelles where the cars are almost non-existent. Everybody rides bicycles around the island. It is the best way to explore beautiful beaches and nature.

To get to some beaches in La Digue is quite a hike but it is worth the sweat. We really liked Anse Cocos Beach but you can’t compare it to the calm beaches on Praslin Island. You have to be careful when swimming in La Digue because the waves and currents are very strong. I did not know this before visiting Seychelles.

MAHE ISLAND IN SEYCHELLES

Mahe island has the world’s smallest capital called Victoria and nearby you can visit Botanical Gardens. There are also many hiking trails around the island but at the time we were visiting (the end of March) it was too hot for us.

One of my favourite activities to do on Mahe was visiting the Takamaka rum distillery and their rum tasting. Two best beaches on Mahe were: Anse Intendance and Petite Anse but in my opinion, the best beach in those three islands of Seychelles has to be Anse Lazio on Praslin.

GROCERY STORES AND VEGAN FOOD IN SEYCHELLES

In Seychelles, we stayed at self-catering apartments. There was no breakfast so we had to explore local shops. Most of the markets have vegan milk which really surprised me. You can find almond, coconut, or soy milk but I could not find any vegan yoghurt or tofu. But we did find a vegan pate!

They have frozen and some fresh vegetables but it depends on the market. I was surprised by how hard it is to find fresh fruits and vegetables in shops. The best way to buy them is by road, there are many food stands selling fresh fruits and vegetables. When visiting the Capital Victoria you can also check the biggest fresh fruit and vegetable market in Seychelles.

VEGAN FOOD ON PRASLIN ISLAND IN THE SEYCHELLES

ROOTS JUICERY IS THE ONLY VEGAN RESTAURANT

Roots Juicery is a fully vegan juice and smoothie bar. Their philosophy is to make healthy plant-based nutrition accessible across Seychelles. They are creating food and products that are guilt-free and packed with goodness. At Roots Juicery you can order fresh vegan juices and smoothies.

They offer nut mylks, granola, plant-based snacks, and wellness shots. They are my go-to place for smoothie bowls on the island. Roots Juicery was the only place making smoothie bowls I could find in Seychelles at the time of our visit. It is my favourite food to eat in the tropical heat.

THE NEST – RESTAURANT WITH VEGAN OPTIONS

The Nest restaurant is based inside Constance Lemuria resort on Praslin. Reservation is a must, otherwise, they won’t let you inside the resort. You have to make a reservation at the same resort if you want to visit the beautiful beach Anse Georgette. It is best if you visit them both on the same day.

The ambiance, view, and decor in this restaurant are really nice. All the vegan dishes are marked on the menu. We ordered the vegan salad for our starter. After that, we had vegan curry. The food was good but on the pricier side. We really enjoyed our vegan lunch.

VEGAN FOOD ON LA DIGUE ISLAND IN THE SEYCHELLES

GALA TAKEAWAY

Gala Takeaway was a takeaway restaurant we visited the most on La Digue. Takeaway restaurants in Seychelles are the most budget-friendly, so most of the tourists eat there. We mostly ordered delicious vegetable curry and vegan fried rice with vegetables.

REY AND JOSH TAKEAWAY

They offer vegetable curry and vegan lentils. These two dishes are the most popular vegan options in Seychelles. Rey and Josh takeaway was one of the best ones.

The owners are friendly, so the atmosphere is great.

VEGAN FOOD ON MAHE ISLAND IN THE SEYCHELLES

PERRY’S GRILL

Perry’s Grill is an amazing restaurant on Mahe Island. We visited this restaurant twice because the owners were friendly and the food was delicious. They also have more vegetarian options than other restaurants. Most of the vegetarian options can be made vegan. Vegan Ratatouille was our go-to dish but you can also have vegetable skewers. You also need to try their tropical avocado salad.

MAHEK – INDIAN RESTAURANT WITH VEGAN OPTIONS

Mahek restaurant is an Indian restaurant on Beau Vallon Beach in Seychelles. On their menu, there is only vegetarian food. Many vegetarian dishes can be easily made vegan.

We tried Urulai Broccoli and Kai Korma. Urulai Broccoli was our favourite choice. The staff is really friendly and they know all about vegan food. The best time to visit this restaurant is at sunset.

HOW TO TRAVEL AROUND SEYCHELLES

You can stay at the resorts and relax or you can explore the islands by yourself. On Mahe and Praslin you have to rent a car because both islands are quite big and with a car, you can visit all the hidden parts. Make your car reservations as soon as you have your plane tickets because it is hard or almost impossible to find a car last minute. On Praslin, we were really happy with Capricorn car rentals.

Seychelles really is amazingly beautiful. It is one place you have to visit if you love beautiful tropical destinations even though there are not a lot of vegan options. If you are a foodie like me, that might not be ideal for your perfect holiday, but Seychelles are worth it.
