Join us as we explore the best free things to do in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong is quite an expensive city, with pricey hotels, restaurants, and attractions, it is still an incredible destination worth visiting.

Even if you’re a budget traveller, there are plenty of ways to experience the city without breaking the bank. From vibrant night markets to stunning free views of the skyline, we’ve compiled a list of free activities you can enjoy during your visit to Hong Kong.

1. LUGARD ROAD IN HONG KONG – FREE AND AMAZING VIEW

If you want to experience the famous and beautiful view of Hong Kong Lugard Road is the place to go. It is a free walking path with spectacular views of the city.

The walk on Lugard Road is easy, and you do not need any special equipment, just a comfortable pair of sneakers, a bottle of water, and mosquito repellent. It is a stunning walk that offers an amazing free view of Hong Kong.

You have two options to get there: taking the tram or the bus. However, please note that these are not free. If you’re in the mood for hiking, you can walk to Lugard Road, but be prepared for quite a challenging hill.

2. AVENUE OF STARS: A FREE WALKING PROMENADE

It is a free walking promenade and one of Hong Kong’s iconic sights with a beautiful view of the skyline. Avenue of Stars honors those who have greatly contributed to Hong Kong movie theatre.

There is also a Bruce Lee statue and every night at 8 PM you can watch a Symphony of Lights, a free 10-minute light and sound show.

3. MAN MO TEMPLE – FREE TEMPLE EXPERIENCE IN HONG KONG

Man Mo Temple is a beautiful temple in Hong Kong. It is hidden among all the tall skyscrapers and is a true little gem worth visiting. It is a peaceful temple in the middle of the bustling city.

The entrance is free so it is a great spot to visit in Hong Kong.

4. CENTRAL-MID-LEVELS ESCALATORS: FUN AND A FREE RIDE

It is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. We did not expect it to be this long. Be prepared for a long ride, because it covers about 800 metres in distance.

It is a fun and totally free activity to do in Hong Kong.

Just remember, that you have to walk all the way down when you reach the top.

5. TEMPLE STREET NIGHT MARKET IN HONG KONG

This market in Hong Kong comes alive as the sun sets. It will offer you a glimpse into the city’s energetic street culture. You can wander through a maze of stalls that sell everything from trendy gadgets to local artworks and souvenirs.

Enjoy the lively atmosphere filled with the sounds of bargaining and local chatter. Every visit is unique and the experience is totally free. You will only spend money if you can’t resist buying some souvenirs.

6. CHI LIN NUNNERY AND NAN LIAN GARDEN – FREE BEAUTIFUL GARDENS

If you have some extra time in the city and want to visit a scenic garden this is the place to go. The garden is full of beautiful Bonsai trees.

You can also visit Chi Lin Nunnery, a beautiful Buddhist temple just across the street from the Nan Lian Garden. Entrance to both gardens and the nunnery is free, so it is a great place to spend some time in Hong Kong.

It’s also a great spot to enjoy some nature in the heart of the concrete jungle. If you are not staying in that area you will need to walk or spend a few dollars on the public transport.

7. GO ON A FREE WALKING TOUR

We have found an agency that offers the best free walking tours of the city. You can join an introductory tour of Hong Kong, exploring the city like a local while experiencing its history, food, and unique culture.

During the tour, you’ll visit famous sights such as the Man Mo Temple and the Central-Mid-Levels Escalators. You’ll also receive excellent food recommendations – don’t forget to ask about the most affordable restaurants in Hong Kong!

Another free tour available is the Kowloon Market walking tour, where you’ll discover hidden gems of the city. This tour provides insights into Hong Kong’s rich culture, as well as fascinating lessons on Feng Shui and the gemstones sold in the market.

The agency also offers additional tours in Hong Kong, but these come at a cost.

AFFORDABLE HOTELS IN HONG KONG

We understand that accommodation can be one of the biggest expenses when visiting Hong Kong, so we’ve found some of the best-rated and most affordable hotels to complement our guide of free activities. Here are our top picks:

Ocean Inn – Hong Kong

Ocean Inn is the most affordable option on our list. It is in a great location, close to one of our favourite free attractions – the Temple Street Night Market.

The rooms are simple but very clean, and with the MTR nearby, getting around the city is easy.

Check availability and book your room now!

Sleep Inn

Sleep Inn is another excellent budget choice. Just a minute away from the MTR and close to the free attraction: The Avenue of Stars, its location is ideal.

The hotel is very clean, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Do keep in mind, though, that the rooms are quite small.

Check the availability and price here.

Tung Nam Lou Art Hotel

Tung Nam Lou Art Hotel offers a bit more comfort, though it’s slightly more expensive than the other options. While the MTR isn’t as close as the previous hotels, it’s still in a convenient location.

This 3-star hotel is clean, with very comfortable beds, making it our favourite choice overall.

Hong Kong is not the easiest destination if you are a vegan. It is a good idea to do a bit of research before you arrive, to avoid any stress when hunger strikes. Fortunately, we have compiled a list of some of the best vegan restaurants in the city.

One important thing to know is that the term ‘vegan’ is not widely used in Hong Kong; it’s often referred to as ‘vegetarian food’. In non-vegetarian restaurants, always check with the staff to ensure that the vegetarian options don’t contain egg or fish sauce. You will need a reservation in many Hong Kong restaurants, especially for dinner, so don’t forget to book ahead.

BEST VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN HONG KONG

Here is the list of our favourite restaurants:

ROOT VEGAN HONG KONG

Root Vegan offers a diverse lunch menu featuring various vegan burgers, Dan Dan linguine, Northern Thai curry noodles, and much more.

Everything on the menu is fully vegan, and some dishes are even gluten-free. The restaurant also has some fantastic starters, like smoked carrots and vegan cream cheese on seed crackers.

VEGGIE KINGDOM

Veggie Kingdom is a vegan Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong, known for its unique and modern vegan dishes. They offer special lunch and dinner menus.

At lunchtime, you can enjoy a variety of dim sum, while for dinner, the menu features delicious Sichuan dishes, sizzling casseroles, and a wide range of rice and noodle options. There’s also a good selection of desserts, with our favourite being their mango pudding.

VEGGIE4LOVE – VEGAN HONG KONG

Veggie4Love is a vegan restaurant offering international cuisine. You can choose from a range of interesting Asian dishes or opt for a tasty burger.

Their plant-based burger options are impressive, including lentil burgers, vegan beef patties, soy patties, and vegan chicken burgers with Korean sauce.

VEDA HONG KONG

VEDA is an Indian vegetarian restaurant that offers a separate menu for vegan and gluten-free options.

They have a great selection of dishes, including salads, small snacks, and main courses. For dessert, they serve a delicious plant-based chocolate mousse.

TREEHOUSE – H CODE VEGAN HONG KONG

It is a plant-based dining chain with several locations across Hong Kong, including Causeway Bay, Heath, and Taikoo. All their dishes are completely unprocessed and free from preservatives, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and dyes.

Their menu features delicious salad bowls and burgers, as well as desserts like cookies and brownies.

ISOYA JAPANESE VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

Isoya offers a lunch set menu where you can customise your meal to be fully vegan by opting out of dairy and eggs. Alternatively, you can simply order a ramen.

The food is not only delicious but also unique, making this a must-visit restaurant when in Hong Kong.

ORIENTAL VEGETARIAN

Oriental Vegetarian offers a wide selection of vegan dishes, including many faux meat options as well as meals without them.

You can try dishes like plant-based spicy chicken pot, fried rice with black truffle, or their signature sweet and sour plant-based pork.

EVERYDAY – VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

Everyday is a vegetarian buffet in Hong Kong with a friendly atmosphere and an all-you-can-eat option. However, it can get very busy at lunchtime.

About half of the dishes are vegan, and the food is clearly labelled, so it’s easy to identify the plant-based options.

LN FORTUNATE COFFE – VEGAN HONG KONG

It is a great spot for a plant-based breakfast in Hong Kong. Their menu includes options like French toast and a variety of plant-based sandwiches. For lunch, you can choose from dishes such as pasta or bibimbap.

They also serve vegan desserts, including bubble waffles, and offer an impressive range of coffee options like rose soy latte, ginger soy latte, and matcha soy latte.

CHI LIN VEGETARIAN

Located within the Nan Lian Garden, a beautiful classical Chinese garden, this restaurant is an ideal spot to visit. It’s right next to the Chi Lin Nunnery, making it a lovely place for a peaceful break. You can enjoy light vegan snacks, or opt for lunch or dinner.

The menu includes dumplings, noodles, noodle soup, and a few other dishes, along with vegan ice cream.

WHERE TO STAY IN HONG KONG?

Hotels in Hong Kong are not very affordable, but there are many great options to choose from. We compared hotel prices and found out that Agoda has the best deals for the city.

Here are our best recommendations:

Affordable – The Cityview Hotel Hong Kong

The Cityview Hotel is in a great location in the heart of Yau Ma Tei close to the Temple Street Night Market. The hotel has world-class green eco standards and provides great accommodation in Hong Kong.

Check availability and book your room now!

Mid-Range – Hotel Icon Hong Kong

I must admit that this one is a little bit more expensive mid-range, but we loved it so much and I know that there are many way more expensive hotels than this one.

The rooms in Hotel Icon are spacious, and we loved the drinking water tap so there is no need for plastic water bottles. The view from the room is beautiful and there is also a pool with a skyline view. If you have the option to go to this hotel I would not think twice.

Ready to experience this hotel? Click here to secure your reservation.

Expensive – The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong

It is located in the heart of Kowloon in Tsim Sha Tsui. Because the hotel starts at the 102nd floor every room has a spectacular view of the city.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel has world-class service, and it is one of the best accommodations in the city if you have the budget for it.

Click here to book your luxurious getaway.

WHAT TO DO IN HONG KONG

Spain in November might not offer tropical heat, but don’t let that fool you because it is still an incredible destination for a late-autumn escape! In the south, particularly, you’ll find pleasantly mild temperatures, perfect for exploring without the summer crowds.

6. GO ON AN ADVENTURE IN ITALY

Italy in November may not offer the blazing summer sun, but it is still a great choice for a peaceful and pleasant getaway. The southern regions, in particular, offer warmer temperatures and, best of all, far fewer crowds.

You can explore iconic sites like Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily. Travelling becomes so much easier and more enjoyable without the summer heat or the hustle and bustle of peak season.

November is the perfect time to experience Italy’s rich history and enjoy its world-renowned cuisine. You can experience the country’s charm at a more relaxed pace. If you decide to wander through ancient ruins or enjoy a delicious meal in a quiet piazza, Italy in November feels like a hidden gem.

7. VISIT THE PERFECT NOVEMBER DESTINATION: LAOS

Laos is not a country that is usually on the list of most travelers. We decided to visit this hidden gem in November, and we had the most perfect weather. This landlocked country is nestled between Thailand and Vietnam. In November, it offers tropical weather with a lot of sunshine.

You can visit the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang or go to backpackers’ heaven Vang Vieng. In Laos, you can decide if you want to relax or do adventurous activities. You will find the best combination of both worlds.

Hong Kong is one of our favourite cities in the world, for the best travel experience we created our list of top 10 travel tips for visiting the city. Hong Kong has a beautiful skyline, friendly locals, great food, and shopping.

There are so many amazing things to see and do in Hong Kong. Here are our best travel tips for first-time visitors.

1ST TRAVEL TIP – USE OCTOPUS CARD IN HONG KONG

Octopus card is a multipurpose card to use in Hong Kong. You can buy it at any 7/11 store but can only top up the card with cash.

You can use the Octopus card for all public transport and most attractions. This card will make your time in the city easier. If you visit the city often it is great to have this card.

2ND TRAVEL TIP – BUY A LOCAL SIM CARD

Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere but if you are not familiar with Hong Kong and need to use Google Maps for navigation, then a local sim card is a must-have.

You can buy a local SIM card at Klook or any 7/11 store in the city.

3RD TRAVEL TIP – USE KLOOK IN HONG KONG

I was not familiar with Klook app before travelling to Hong Kong. Many attractions have better prices if you buy tickets through Klook.

Waiting times for attractions are shorter if you buy your tickets in advance. It is the best app to use in the city and one of our most important travel tips.

You can also buy an Octopus card, local sim card, and Airport Express ticket through Klook. Do not forget to download the app before traveling to Hong Kong.

4TH TRAVEL TIP – USE AIRPORT EXPRESS

Airport Express is the best way to get in and out of the city. It is fast and efficient, and you do not have to worry about the traffic.

It takes about 24 minutes to get from the airport to the city.

5th TRAVEL TIP – HAVE CASH IN HONG KONG

In most cases, you can pay with a credit card but there are some cash-only examples. Taxis are cash only and if you need to top up your Octopus card you can only use cash.

There are many ATMs available all around the city.

6th TRAVEL TIP – MAKE RESERVATIONS FOR POPULAR RESTAURANTS

Hong Kong is a city with a large population. If you have a special restaurant in mind for your dinner date, make a reservation upfront. At weekends, most of the popular restaurants are full or have long waiting lines.

7TH TRAVEL TIP – GOOGLE MAPS IS GREAT FOR NAVIGATION AROUND HONG KONG

Google Maps was our best friend in Hong Kong. It is familiar with MTR stations and timetables, so it always helped us find the most efficient way to our destination.

To use Google Maps in the city – do not forget to buy a local SIM card.

8th TRAVEL TIP FOR HONG KONG – TRAVEL ADAPTER

Most electrical outlets in Hong Kong take a three-pronged UK-style plug. So do not forget your travel plug adapter if you need one. If you are staying in a fancy hotel there is an option that your hotel will provide an adapter.

9TH TRAVEL TIP – WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES

You have a lot of walking to do, sometimes even uphill, so wear shoes that you are comfortable in. A good pair of sneakers or my favourite for hot weather – the Birkenstocks.

If you are visiting Hong Kong in a rainy season wear waterproof shoes.

10TH TRAVEL TIP – HAVE A HOTEL NEAR MTR STATION

It is not a must, but it makes your life much easier.

If you are visiting Hong Kong for just a few days and have limited time to squeeze in all the important sightseeing, you do not want to make any extra steps to get to the MTR.

BEST HOTELS NEAR MTR STATION IN HONG KONG

Hotels in Hong Kong are expensive. There are many good hotels but not all of them are near the MTR station. We compared hotel prices and found out that Agoda has the best deals for the city.

Here are our best recommendations:

AFFORDABLE – THE CITYVIEW

The Cityview is in a great location in Hong Kong that is close to the Temple Street Night Market. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and reasonably priced.

Check the hotel availability here.

AFFORDABLE – OCEAN INN

Ocean Inn is the most affordable option we could find in a great location. The rooms are clean and simple and the location is right next to the MTR station. The reviews are also amazing. If you are low on a budget for your Hong Kong travel this is a great accommodation to choose.

Check the availability and price here.

MID-RANGE – HOTEL CORDIS

Hotel Cordis is located in Kowloon. It is directly linked to the MTR station and the Langham Place shopping mall. The location is amazing, and most of the rooms offer incredible views of the city.

Breakfast is delicious, and there is also a rooftop pool with views. Do not miss out on this amazing hotel; check the availability here.

MID-RANGE – HOTEL ICON

This hotel is a little bit more expensive than the mid-range, but we loved staying there. The rooms in Hotel Icon are spacious and comfortable. Every room also has a drinking water tap. Because of that, you do not need to buy plastic water bottles.

Some of the rooms have amazing views, and there is also a pool with a skyline view. If you have the option to go to this hotel, I would not think twice.

Check the availability on Agoda here.

EXPENSIVE – THE RITZ-CARLTON

It is located in the heart of Kowloon in Tsim Sha Tsui. The Ritz-Carlton hotel has world-class service, and it is one of the best accommodations in the city if you have the budget for it.

Because the hotel starts at the 102nd floor, every room has a spectacular view of the city.

Hong Kong is my favourite city, and here is the guide to my top 10 favourite things to do. The city is safe and clean. It also has fascinating architecture and delicious food.

I recommend staying for at least 4 nights, if you have time, ideally would be to stay at least one week, because there is so much to see and do.

The easiest way to travel around the city is with an Octopus card. You can use the card for all public transport and entrances. If your accommodation is strategically located, you can also do a lot of sightseeing on foot. Here are my top 10 things to do in Hong Kong:

AVENUE OF STARS

Avenue of Stars is a walking promenade and one of Hong Kong’s iconic sights, with a beautiful view of the skyline. It honors those who have greatly contributed to the Hong Kong movie theatre. It is a great place to soak up some sun and beautiful views.

There is also a Bruce Lee statue, and every night at 8 PM, you can watch a Symphony of Lights, which is a 10-minute light and sound show.

THE PEAK TOWER – SKY TERRACE 428

Sky Terrace 428 is one of the must-visit places in Hong Kong. You can go there by taxi or the Peak Tram. I loved my experience with the Peak Tram. It is just a short ride uphill on a beautiful tram with glass ceilings, so you can see the amazing view.

The view from the top is breathtaking, and you get many beautiful photo opportunities. You can buy tickets for Sky Terrace and the Peak Tram in advance with Klook and avoid waiting in line.

My top tip for visiting the Sky Terrace 428 is to pick a day with clear skies so you will have the best view possible.

LUGARD ROAD IN HONG KONG

When you are visiting the Sky Terrace 428, you can also visit the Lugard Road. The walk on Lugard Road is easy, and you do not need any special equipment, just a comfortable pair of sneakers, a bottle of water, and mosquito repellent.

It is a stunning walk that offers an amazing view of Hong Kong.

MAN MO TEMPLE

Man Mo Temple is a beautiful temple in Hong Kong. It is hidden among all the tall skyscrapers. It is a peaceful temple in the middle of the city. There is no entrance fee.

LANTAU ISLAND – BIG BUDDHA

It is a must when visiting Hong Kong. The best way to get there is with Ngong Ping 360 gondola. There is a cheaper option to take the bus, but it takes longer to get there.

On Lantau Island, you will find the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. For this activity, you will need at least half a day.

1-DAY TRIP FROM HONG KONG TO MACAO

The best way to do a daily trip to Macao is with TurboJet. It is a fast Jet that will take you from one destination to the other in about one hour. The ride is smooth and comfortable. Do not forget that you need to bring your passport.

Macao is a unique destination where you will find modern hotels with big casinos, and in the city centre, you will find a true Portugal vibe.

DIM SUM IN HONG KONG

When visiting Hong Kong, you have to try dim sum. Dim Sum refers to small, sweet, and savory dishes combined with drinking tea.

There are many dishes to choose from, and usually, the menu includes dumplings and steamed buns.

CHI LIN NUNNERY AND NAN LIAN GARDEN

If you have some extra time in the city and want to visit a scenic garden, this is the place to go. The garden is full of beautiful Bonsai trees. There is also a vegetarian restaurant right in the park.

You can also visit Chi Lin Nunnery, a beautiful Buddhist temple just across the street from the Nan Lian Garden.

TAKE A RIDE WITH HONG KONG TAXI

I know it is just a taxi ride, but in Hong Kong, every taxi ride is special. The taxis are iconic, and they are affordable, so do not be afraid to jump in one.

CENTRAL-MID-LEVELS ESCALATORS

It is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. It covers about 800 metres in distance. We did not expect it to be this long. It is a fun activity to do in Hong Kong.

Just remember that you have to walk all the way down when you reach the top.

SHOPPING – K11 MUSEA

Luxurious shops are everywhere in Hong Kong. If you love all the big and famous brands, this is the city for you. One of the most luxurious shopping centres in the city is K11 Musea.

WHERE TO STAY IN HONG KONG

Accommodation in Hong Kong is not very affordable, but there are many great hotels to choose from. We compared hotel prices and discovered that Agoda has the best deals for the city.

AFFORDABLE – THE CITYVIEW

The Cityview has comfortable rooms and is in a great location close to the Temple Street Night Market. The Cityview hotel has world-class green eco standards, and it is a good accommodation in Hong Kong.

Check the hotel availability here.

MID-RANGE – CORDIS

Hotel Cordis offers amazing views from most of the rooms available. It is in a great location and right next to the MTR station. The breakfast selection is great, and it also offers a rooftop pool.

The location, views, and price are the main reasons we chose the Hotel Cordis for our next visit to the city. You can check the availability here.

MID-RANGE – HOTEL ICON

The rooms in Hotel Icon are spacious. Every room has a drinking water tap, so there is no need for plastic water bottles. The view from the pool is beautiful, with a skyline view of the city. If you have the budget to go to this hotel, do not think twice.
