Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, is the greenest capital in Europe. It stands as one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. Everything is conveniently close, offering plenty to see and do! Ljubljana is also very vegan-friendly!

WHAT TO DO IN LJUBLJANA?

The city centre may be small, but it’s charming. You can visit Ljubljana Castle, Prešeren Square, Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, Tivoli Park, Central Market, Metelkova City, and so much more. My favourite by far is Triple Bridge.

You must also take a walk to Ljubljana Castle. It’s an easy 20-minute walk, or you can take the Ljubljana Castle Funicular Railway, which will bring you to the top of the hill for an amazing view of the entire city. Alternatively, there is an option for a guided walking tour

One thing you should not miss is a walk in Park Tivoli. It is Ljubljana’s largest park where locals love to relax after work.

WHERE TO STAY IN LJUBLJANA?

My favourite option would be to stay at the Neu Residence, a brand-new building featuring beautiful apartments and a fantastic rooftop pool with city views. If it’s not within your budget, there are many other great choices available. Explore other options on Booking.com.

WHERE TO EAT VEGAN FOOD IN LJUBLJANA?

BARBARELLA JUICEBAR

Our favourite vegan restaurant in Ljubljana is Barbarella. There are two locations in the city: Barbarella Juicebar and Barbarella BTC, both of which are 100% vegan. Each day offers a different lunch special. You can also enjoy fresh salads or a burger. Their cakes and desserts are the best.

Barbarella also offers various breakfast options! You can choose from a smoothie bowl, porridge, or chia pudding. My favourite is the blueberry vanilla protein smoothie!

VEGANIKA

Located in the heart of Ljubljana, Veganika offers healthy bowls for lunch that are all delicious! They also serve amazing breakfast options. Their desserts are also amazing and don’t forget to order a smoothie.

GRASHKA DELI

Grashka Deli is a vegan restaurant and deli in the city, beautifully situated with views of the Ljubljanica River. Their menu features healthy bowls, burgers, and our favourite—the vegan hot dog.

They prepare simple recipes that focus on wholesome superfoods, rich in protein, fiber, and micronutrients, sourcing their produce directly from organic and regenerative farms. This restaurant is a must-visit when you’re in Ljubljana.

PICCOLA

Piccola is our new favourite spot for vegan Romana pizza in Ljubljana. Alongside traditional meat and cheese pizzas, they offer six vegan options featuring their in-house-made cheese and salami.

You must try their salami pizza and pizza called ‘La Citta’. However, the standout at this restaurant isn’t just the pizza; it’s the best vegan tiramisu I have ever tried. Truly a must-visit for anyone craving delightful flavours.

GAUDI & NAAN

This fully vegan restaurant in the city centre offers a weekly changing daily lunch option alongside an à la carte menu. Enjoy delicious starters such as smoked rolls or tartare. For mains, choose from dishes like pad Thai, roasted aubergine, or curry.

Don’t miss their five-course tasting menu, complete with wine pairings!

ABI FALAFEL IN LJUBLJANA

Abi Falafel offers the best falafel in town, located right in the centre of Ljubljana. Enjoy a delicious falafel wrap or a vegan falafel plate. Choose from takeaway or, if you’re lucky enough to find a table, dine in. Just remember, it can get quite busy in the evenings!

GUJŽINA

Gujžina offers a unique twist on traditional Slovenian cuisine with its vegan/vegetarian menu. While most dishes are vegan, it’s wise to check before ordering as some contain dairy and are vegetarian.

If you’re eager to try traditional Slovenian food, this is the place to go! They feature a traditional dish called bograč, various vegan steaks with sauces, and even a traditional Slovenian dessert known as the Over Mura Moving Cake.

GOSTILNA VIDA

Located in the old city centre of Ljubljana, Gostilna Vida is a trendy restaurant that, while not exclusively vegan, offers some vegan options. You can enjoy breakfast or brunch here. For lunch or dinner, try the delicious poke bowl or soba noodles with tempeh.

Don’t miss the secret garden at the back of the restaurant!

FOCULUS RESTAURANT LJUBLJANA

Foculus Restaurant is home to one of the best pizzas in Ljubljana. When I transitioned to a plant-based diet, the one thing I missed was traditional pizza, but here, you can find the perfect pizza. Any pizza on the menu can be made with vegan cheese instead of regular cheese.

My personal preference is the classic Margherita topped with mushrooms. They also offer gluten-free dough.

TINK SUPERFOOD

Tink Superfood Café is a cosy restaurant located in the city centre of Ljubljana. It features a few tables both outside and inside. I prefer to take my food away and enjoy it in a park or by a spot with a view of the Ljubljanica river.

The restaurant isn’t exclusively vegan, but it does offer vegan options. They serve two types of poke bowls: one with tahini and tempeh, and another with peanut and tempeh. You can also order a smoothie and choose from several breakfast options.

SARRBING (KOREAN BINGSU)

This Korean restaurant specializes mainly in bingsu, which is sadly not vegan. However, they offer the best and most affordable vegan ramen in Ljubljana! You can also order dumplings. Besides the delicious food, the owners are extremely friendly and welcoming.

ZANOODLE

Zanoodle is a trendy restaurant specialising in noodles. Here, you can enjoy vegan options such as fried rice, noodle soup, wok noodles, and noodles with asparagus. It’s the perfect spot for anyone looking to indulge in a variety of noodle dishes.

TLOFT

While many restaurants in Ljubljana offer vegan sushi, my all-time favourite is Tloft. They serve a variety of Asian dishes, but the sushi is the standout. If you’re a sushi enthusiast, you must try the “Big Maki Grill Double Tofu Roll.” It’s a real treat for vegan sushi lovers.

RESTAURANT STRELEC ON LJUBLJANA’S CASTLE

If you enjoy fine dining, Restaurant Strelec offers an exquisite vegan dinner experience within Ljubljana’s castle. You can indulge in a five-course tasting menu while enjoying a beautiful view of the city.

Remember to make a reservation a few days in advance and specify that you would like the vegan menu.

FARI’S

Fari’s is a fast-food restaurant featuring a predominantly vegan menu. You can choose to take your food to go or eat in.

The menu offers a variety of dishes including falafel wraps, vegan chicken wraps, various burgers, and salads. If you’re craving something crispy, try their roll box and nuggets—these are my favourites!

For a city of its size, Ljubljana boasts a wealth of vegan restaurants. Some that I didn’t have time to visit but are worth mentioning include Restaurant Mandala, Gourmet Vegan, and Radha Govinda.

If you’re staying in an Airbnb with a kitchen, the Ljubljana Central Market is a great place to find local farmers selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and other produce.

ljubljana-view

Ljubljana is a European capital that will leave a lasting impression on you. Despite its small size, the city is packed with wonderful sights and activities! The best part about Ljubljana is its safety, even at night!
